RIGA IFF is a two-week film festival in Latvia, featuring competitions, industry events, and public screenings. Our goal was to communicate the idea of the festival as a significant and very diverse event in which many different subcategories live within.

Dismantling the logo into separate shapes and lines gave us the possibility to use them as the basic ingredients to create modules and patterns that would translate the story behind the festival and each of its nine different programmes.

In 2018, we designed a visual identity honoring the female gaze and directors, with subtle nods to the post-truth era.

Keeping close to the foundation of the identity we had created for the previous year, together with the RIGA IFF 2019 team we refined it by reducing the volume of typography, strengthening the festival's guidelines and overall design principles.

We collaborated with RIGA IFF to create a 2020 visual identity using collages of ‘screenshots’ from the present. A distortion technique blurs boundaries, forming a fragmented story that invites reflection, curiosity, and comfort in its soft blur.

Project Description

RIGA IFF is a two week international film festival held in the Latvian capital. It mixes competition and industry events with an extensive programme of screenings open to the general public.

The brand identity builds upon the previous years' identity, which received the Latvian Design Awards Grand Prix in 2018, continuing with a colourful and vibrant visual language. Yet paying homage to continuity hasn't become self-centred, leaving enough room for new experiments and flexibility in communication of the current theme.

Bold typography and fine line abstract illustrations formed foundation for dozens of layouts, objects and digital experiences. While visually appealing, it is also grounded in the intentions of the festival and its programme, one of cinematic diversity yet a shared philosophy.
